GI2AM gets a Prometeo project as a R&D group of Excellence in the Region of Valencia On 29th May of 2013, the Environmental Engineering Research Group GI2AM from the Chemical Engineering Department of the University of Valencia (Spain) got a new project of the Prometeo program for R&D groups of Excellence (Generalitat Valenciana). This program aims to identify, support and strengthen R&D groups of Excellence in the Region of Valencia. The aim of the project Prometeo/2013/053 is the development of the anaerobic biowashing technology to remove volatile organic compounds (VOC) emissions from the industrial use of solvents with high water solubility. This novel process is presented as an alternative both economically and environmentally friendly compared to conventional systems based on physical and chemical processes. |

GI2AM organizes the 2nd National Meeting in Bioprocesses for air polluted treatment

On 17th November of 2016, 2nd National Meeting in Bioprocesses for air polluted treatment took place at ETSE (Escola Tècnica Superior d’Enginyeria) of University of Valencia. This meeting was organized by GI2AM and financed by the project Prometeo 2013/053.
The success of the first meeting in 2014 motivated the celebration of a second conference, which was considered as a meeting place for young national researchers who focus their work on the biotreatment of contaminated air. These researchers had the opportunity to present their recent lines of research, as well as interact and exchange ideas and experiences between them. It also involved well-established researchers with scientific trajectories of international relevance in the field of biotreatment of gaseous effluents.

GI2AM attendace to a meeting in “Extremophiles for Environmental Biotechnology”

On 3th July of 2015, members of GI2AM, Marta Izquierdo, Carlos Lafita and Pablo Ferrero attended the meeting “From Hell to heaven: Extremophiles for Environmental Biotechnology”, organized by IRTA (Instituto de Investigación en Tecnología Agroalimentaria), that took place in Caldes de Montbui, Barcelona, Spain.
The aim of the meeting was to provide an interdisciplinary forum for the exchange of ideas and the discussion of recent results in the fields of extremophilic microorganisms and their biotechnological applications. The program was carefully designed to fulfill the interests of scientists, engineers, microbiologists and biotechnologists. Professionals and students with a general interest on microbiology and biotechnology were also welcome to this meeting.

On 27th October of 2014, National Meeting in Bioprocesses for air polluted treatment took place at ETSE (Escola Tècnica Superior d’Enginyeria) of University of Valencia. This meeting was organized by GI2AM and financed by the project Prometeo 2013/053.
The aim of the meeting was the exchange of ideas and experiences between different research groups and companies that are developing biotreatments in controlling air pollution. It was intended to provide a forum for discussion about biotechnologies used in these processes and future perspectives.

GI2AM attendace to a meeting in “Anaerobic Digestion of Food Industry Byproducts: Local Solutions to Global Problems”

On 4th July of 2014, members of GI2AM, Carmen Gabaldón, Marta Izquierdo and Javier Álvarez attended the meeting “Anaerobic Digestion of Food Industry Byproducts: Local Solutions to Global Problems”, organized by IRTA (Instituto de Investigación en Tecnología Agroalimentaria), that took place in Caldes de Montbui, Barcelona, Spain.
The aim of the meeting was to provide an interdisciplinary forum for discussion and exchange of ideas in the field of anaerobic digestion. The program was prepared in accordance with the interests of scientists, engineers, consultants and technicians working in the areas of environmental policy environmental technology, waste management, etc. Participation was also open to professionals and students interested in anaerobic digestion.

Guillermo Quijano stay for two months at GI2AM group

Guillermo Quijano did a research stay from 8th September to 31th October 2015 with GI2AM group. The aim of the research was the study of biological degradation of styrene in multiphase systems (two-phase partitioning bioreactors). Quijano Professor carried out experimental activities and made two presentations, one on the framework of Final Conference of the European Project Next Air Biotreat and a second one as part of the training activities of GI2AM research group.
GI2AM hosts Prof. Dr. Karl-Heinrich Engesser from the University of Stuttgart in a monthly stay for interchanging research experiences and knowledge

Professor Karl-Heinrich Engesser from the Department of Biological Waste Air Cleaning of the Universität Stuttgart (Germany) was invited as visiting professor in the GI2AM of the Universitat de València. This stay was financed by the Generalitat Valenciana (autonomous government of the Valencian region) under the project Prometeo 2013/053.
Within his activities in GI2AM, Prof. Engesser gave a very interesting presentation about microbiology applied to VOC removal by biological waste air purification. Researchers from the GI2AM group and students from the Universitat de València attended the presentation, which took place in Saló de Graus Joan Pelechano, (ETSE, Universitat de València) on 27th of September of 2013.
María Henares Jiménez joined GI2AM group

María Henares joined GI2AM as a PhD student. Her PhD is financed by the Generalitat Valenciana under the project Prometeo 2013/053. The objective of her research is the study of the methane recovery from anaerobic bioreactor effluents by degassing membrane technology.

22nd International Congress of Chemical and Process Engineering

From August 27th to 31th, Carmen Gabaldón, Daniel Bravo, Nadine Vermorel and María Henares participated in the 22th International Congress of Chemical and Process Engineering, which took place in Prague, Czech Republic.
The objective of this joint event was to provide engineers, scientists, researchers, technologists, students and others a platform to present their latest results, to interchange ideas, to make new contacts, to establish new collaborations, and many more. The Congress addressed the full spectrum of chemical and process engineering practice, including current trends and future needs.

IWA Conference on Odours & Air Emissions

The 6th IWA Conference on Odours & Air Emissions was held in Paris (France) 17th and 18th of November 2015. The congress was an opportunity for specialists from the industry, researchers and professionals from all sectors to share ideas and experiences on odor management, regulation, strategic initiatives, technical innovations and their impact on air emissions.

Biotechniques Ghent 2015

This 6th international conference on Biotechniques for air pollution control, was held in Ghent (Belgium), from the 2nd to the 4th of September 2015. The conference covered a wide range of topics related to the application of environmental biotechnology for air pollution control, treatment processes in bioreactors and clean (bio) fuels production. The conference tried to facilitate research cooperation between academics and industries, potentially allowing commercialization of new biotechniques.
Members of GI2AM, Carmen Gabaldón, Javier Álvarez, Marta Izquierdo, Pau San Valero and Daniel Bravo presented last results of their research.

IWA Water and Industry 2015 Conference

The Water and Industry conference was held on the 7-10th of June at Mälardalen University in Västerås (Sweden) and was focus on the latest developments in energy-efficient and sustainable wastewater, gas and solid waste treatment in 21st century industry. The event aimed to provide a forum for environmental and chemical engineers, microbiologists, chemists and policy makers to present their most recent technological and scientific breakthroughs in the fields of management, characterization, minimization and abatement of industrial waste and wastewater.
GI2AM members, Marta Izquierdo and Nadine Vermorel, participated to this conference with an oral presentation about anaerobic biodegradation of packaging industry’s solvents.
13th Mediterranean Congress of Chemical Engineering

From September 30th to October 3rd, Marta Izquierdo, Nadine Vermorel and María Henares, members of GI2AM, participated in the 13th Mediterranean Congress of Chemical Engineering (13MCCE), that took place in Barcelona, Spain. This conference was taking place jointly with the international fair of the Chemical Industry EXPOQUIMIA and the International Plastics and Rubber Event: EQUIPLAST. This was an unique opportunity for the 3 researchers to both learn from the inspiring speeches and posters of the conferences and discover the innovative products exhibited in the fairs.
The Congress covered all aspects and results related to Chemical Engineering, to its application in areas as Sustainable Development and Environmental Engineering, Food and Biochemical Engineering, Process and Product Engineering, and classic areas as Separation Technologies, Chemical Reactors, and Processes.
Among the presentations on “Environmental Technology”, GI2AM members presented posters showing the main results of their research within the Prometeo project.

Expociencia 2014, an enjoying Open Day

The Scientific Park of the University of Valencia organised this Saturday 24th of May an Open Day event called Expociencia. The aim of this event was to present the scientific and technological activities of the University to a broad public. GI2AM showed its ongoing research activities and main projects of the group during this interactive event.
For this Expociencia, GI2AM:
- raised public awareness of the importance of Solvents Emission Control,
- explained the biological treament systems they developed and under development to treat Volatile Organic Compounds,
- presented their currently running European projects (TrainonSEC and Next Air Biotreat (Marie Cure Actions)), and the Regional project Prometeo 2013/053,
- and gave the opportunity to hundreds of children and adults to experience the work of a researcher with some especially designed experiments.
